Check ground clamp on your Eastwood MP200i Multi Process, loose connection causes arc issues, use 18V.
Replace contact tip on your Millermatic 251, worn tips cause stuttering, use 220 ipm.
August 29, 2025 at 9:45 am in reply to: best welder for newbie beginners-experts recommendations to choose #71144I have taught a couple of beginners in my garage. I usually recommend something like the Lincoln 90i because of less confusion. The beginners can get discouraged fast if they can not dial in a machine. The Lincoln keeps it straightforward. On the flip side, one of my students bought the ARCCAPTAIN and picked it up pretty quick. He loves that it can handle thicker steel when he is ready. If you want the least frustrating “plug and play” start, Lincoln. If you are okay with a slightly steeper learning curve but more capability then you can go for ARCCAPTAIN.
Adjust drive roll tension on your Lincoln Power MIG 210 MP, set to 3.5, stops skipping.
Feed is jerky cause of bad tension. Adjust roller pressure, my wire feeds smooth now. Check liner for clogs, Use 0.035-inch ER70S-6 wire, And clean with alcohol. Lube the liner too.
Tighten the ground clamp on your Hobart Stickmate, loose grounds cause arc wandering, use 130 amps.
Grinding fan is likely bad bearings. Check motor for wear, And clean vents with compressed air. my fan quieted down after that. Lube bearings, And replace if it is bad.
check for oil vapors, my Esab is safer.
Use larger glovs, they is more comfortable.
Check for gas leaks on your Hobart 190, use 25 CFH argon, fixes porosity.
Switch to a 240V outlet, It is way more stable.
Spotty welds comes from poor prep or settings, Clean steel with acetone before welding, My Esab Rebel had same issue, Use 120 amps for 1/8-inch steel, Set AC balance to 65%, Check tungsten sharpness, Use 25 CFH argon, Ensure clean joint fit-up.
use flexible leather glovs, my grip is better.
Weak studs comes from bad surface prep or settings. clean aluminum with alcohol thorough, use 0.25mm pins for better grip, And adjust weld time to 0.3 seconds. check ground connection, and keep firm pin contact. this improves stud strength.
Warping is from too much heat. use 0.030-inch wire for precision, set voltage to 16V, And tack weld first to hold shape. check argon at 22 CFH, and cool with a damp cloth. this reduces distortion.
Wobbly wheels means loose welds. Reweld with 7018, clamp tight, my cart rolls smooth now.
Use a teflon brush, it avoids cloudiness.
Check motor voltage with a multimeter, my YesWelder feeds fine after tweaking it.
weak welds comes from low power or bad contact. Clean battery terminals with alcohol, use 0.2mm strips for strength, And set pulse to 6-8. check battery charge, and keep firm electrode pressure. this improves weld reliability.
get a leather welding jacket, cotton burns easy.
Use 2% ceriated tungsten on your Miller Maxstar 150, set to 140 amps, stabilizes arc.
Replace contact tip on your Weldpro 200, worn tips cause wire jams, use 220 ipm.
Arc issues comes from bad contact, Check contact tip for wear, My Rebel 235 failed too, Clean tip with alcohol, set wire speed to 240 ipm, use 20 CFH argon, check voltage at 20V, and tighten connections.
Use a 0.035-inch 5356 wire, it is better for consistent welds.
Polish electrode with a fine file, use a 0.08-second pulse, and clean with acetone.
